Metro 2034 book review

Following it’s predecessor, Metro 2033 (You can find our review here), Metro 2034 by same author Dmitri Gluhovski takes us again into dark tunnels of Moscow Metro. But can the successor keep up to the promise of the original story? Let’s go down to Metro 2034 book review to find out!

The story

Taking place one year after what happened in Metro 2033, Metro 2034 follows story of Hunter, one of characters from Metro 2033 who survived but seems to be quite traumatized of previous events. Hunter works as guard of Sevastopolskaya, one of many stations in world of Metro, hiding from his previous allies. When supply runs from nearby station stop and search party does not return, Hunter volunteers to leave on scout mission to find out what has happened. Hunter finds out that there is new threat that can expose whole Metro to risk. Hunter is going on journey to end the threat, but at what cost?

The storywriter

While keeping some of old characters from the old story, Metro 2034 also introduces new heroes. Hunter is accompanied by Homer, a old historian who tries to write the history of Metro so the following generations has documented knowledge about the events that happened. Homer is writing an epic which he thinks Hunter as one of main characters. Later they are accompanied by teenager Sasha, a outcast because her father.
One character in the book is of course the Metro itself. The complex combination of tunnels and stations is a world of itself with stations presented as miniature nations with their own religions, ideologies and purposes. And between these stations are the dark and dangereous tunnels of Metro.

The conclusion

Metro 2034 is quite splendid successor for the original novel. While i liked the first one better, Metro 2034 gives fine story to anyone who liked the first book. Of course, the fascination of first book is little eroded as the world of Metro is now known from the previous story.

While Metro 2034 has it’s thought provoking moments, it feels little more straightforward in terms of plot. There is also more action scenes involved. While these scenes fit in the story, there was little repetiteveness in these scenes.

As a final though, Metro 2034 gives you what you expect: A solid sequel for the first novel. If you liked Metro 2033, you probably enjoy this one too. At next review we will cover how Metro 2035, the third installment in series performs.
