5 Post-apocalyptic movies that are based on books

The end of the world has always interested humankind and movies are no exception to the rule. Post-apocalyptic movies are a genre of it’s own. Throughout the years people have been eager to pay the price of movie ticket to see how the world ends. Post-apocalyptic movies are actually quite old. One of the earliest movies is The End Of The World, a danish movie from 1916 where passing comet causes major disaster around the world. And of course post-apocalyptic classics like Mad Max 2 or Planet Of The Apes are movies that any serious movie watcher has seen. But there are lots of movies that are originally published as books before filmatization. So let’s see 5 Post-apocalyptic movies that are based on books.

The Girl With All The Gifts

The Girl With All The Gifts was released in 2017 and is based on M.R. Carey’s book with same title. The movie takes place in near future where new, destructive fungal infection has destroyed society, leaving survivors fighting against ”hungries”, people who are infected with fungus. In this world, small girl named Melanie goes to army school in lead of teacher  Helen Justineau. When security of school is breached, Melanie must escape with small group of other survivors. Dangers wait in the outside world and soon people must take their stand inside survivor group.

The Road

One of the harshest and depressing (and at the same time one of the most beatiful) books i have read is The Road, a fantastic novel written by Cormac McCarthy which also won Pulitzer price in 2007. A tale set in burned and dead world, a father and son walk through destroyed America, with only theirselves and small revolver for defense. The movie version of The Road was introduced in 2009, starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The movie has strong tone of desparation which is supported by great acting. The movie version of The Road received multiple awards and nominations.

World War Z

World War Z was released in 2006 by author Max Brooks (you can find our book review here). Going around the world, the book consists of stories and interviews of people who survived The Zombie War, an event which almost wiped humanity off the planet. Starring Brad Pitt, movie adaptation was released 2013 and became one of most profitable zombie movies of all time. The movie version of World War Z gives it’s viewers a thrilling ride, just don’t expect it to have much common with the book.

Bird Box

One of Netflix’s most watched movie is Bird Box, a movie adaptation of Josh Malerman’s great debut story (you can find our book review here). Telling story of Malorie and her children living in world where they have to use blindfolds because of monsters who can kill only by seeing them, the movie version can’t quite capture the horror of losing one of your most important senses.

I Am Legend

Starring Will Smith, I Am Legend was released in 2007. The story follows doctor Robert Neville, a last man on earth who is immune to virus that changed everyone else to horrifying mutants. Every day, Neville tries to find other survivors and cure for the virus while avoiding mutants that are lurking in the shadows. I Am Legend is actually based on a book written in 1954 by Richard Matheson. The book and movie version differ quite lot, for example the creatures in book are more vampire-like than mutants. Nonentheless, I Am Legend is certainly a great view but like often in movie adaptations, if you have read the book you have to prepare for quite different story.
