War is over. The Zombie war was incredibly close to wipe humanity off the planet. Only because of people with enough courage and wits, the overwhelming undead tide was turned, resulting to victory of humans over the zombies. But the testimonials of these brave men and women are in danger of being lost over years. So Max Brooks traveled around the world, collecting testimonials to be remembered. World War Z tells these stories. And it does it well. So shamble on to our World War Z book review to find out why!
World War Z tells the story of past war in shape of several interviews of survivors. The story takes reader to different parts of the world, including tens of reviews. For example we read story of a doctor who treated Patient Zero in China where the zombie plague began, a former child refugee in Canada or a survivor from Kyoto, Japan. Each of the interviews paint their own part in horrifying picture that was called Zombie war.
A world in crisis
World war is Z more than story about zombies. It is a realistic description about humanity in front of global crisis never experienced before. The story is divided in sections which desrcibe the progress of crisis. When the crisis starts, there is failed tries to cover up disease from the public, then the great panic when it is too late to isolate the incident and disease is spread across the world resulting in heavy casualties and countless refugees who try to get away from millions of undead. But where do you go when there is nowhere to run? The interviews unravel the traits of human behaviour, be it refugees trying to escape the undead carrying useless household items, officers obeying commands which unnecessary cost thousands of lives or shady people making money and benefiting from the crisis. The most horrifying thing is that reading the book you realize that all this could happen in real life if we were to face similar crisis. You also read stories of people standing against overwhelming enemy, people helping other people unselfishly, people surviving the impossible. The book describes human nature in it’s best and it’s worst.
A remarkable piece of work
As final verdict, World War Z is definetly worth reading for everyone who loves zombie literature. Also if you are not that much into zombies, I would still recommend you to read the book because of realistic take how global crisis could build up. All in all, World War Z is a remarkable piece of work.
Oh, and if you watched the Hollywood movie version of World war Z, you still definetly should take a look at the book. Apart from the title and main theme there is not much common between the book and movie version. The movie is fun watch but doesn’t offer the same cruel and desperate reality of the book.
